CTC-IHLCN Biobank: Advancing Cardiothoracic Research
The CTC-IHLCN Biobank (Cardiothoracic Surgery – Institute for Heart and Lung Surgery Netherlands) is a large-scale research infrastructure that collects biological samples and medical data from patients undergoing heart or lung surgery. This biobank is a collaboration between Amsterdam Universitair Medisch Centrum and Leids Universitair Medisch Centrum, providing researchers with a unique opportunity to gain new insights into the pathophysiology, diagnostics, and treatment of complex cardiothoracic diseases.

Why this biobank?
Cardiothoracic diseases are complex conditions with underlying mechanisms that are not yet fully understood. The CTC-IHLCN Biobank aims to:
- Improve our understanding of the causes and progression of conditions such as valvular disease, myocardial ischemia, pulmonary hypertension, and cardiac tumors.
- Develop personalized risk stratification and treatments by identifying key biomarkers.
- Enhance lifestyle interventions and prevention strategies, tailored to patients with cardiothoracic diseases.
- Enable long-term patient follow-up, allowing us to better assess the outcomes of surgical treatments and therapies.
How does it work?
- The biobank contains blood, vascular tissue, heart tissue, skin biopsies, genetic material, and medical data, stored under strict ethical and scientific guidelines.
- All samples and data are securely coded and adhere to the highest standards of privacy and safety.
- Patients provide voluntary informed consent and can withdraw their participation at any time.

By establishing this biobank, we aim to expand scientific knowledge while contributing to the development of new treatments and personalized healthcare strategies for future generations.
